FROM THE CHAIR

We are one quarter of the way into 2022.  The world continues to have much conflict.  The one thing that has not changed is advocacy for human rights.

To that end, Kimberly Shea, Treasurer, and I participated in the Disability Justice Fair on March 26, hosted by New York State, District 56, Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman.  Particularly, we participated in the panel discussion regarding IEPs in the state.  Since this was a hybrid event, Typewell captions as well as ASL were available via Zoom.

IEPs can be a scary time for parents and students who don’t know how the process works.  The Global Alliance was able to shed light on the process and tips when scheduling an IEP, as well as how to implement technology in a classroom.

In collaboration with the ladies at Hearing Loss Live!, I participated in a podcast and a blog post.  Why do we need you to be part of the Global Alliance?  Answers are in the blog!

Our Executive Committee is now complete!  We would like to welcome Tom Brown from eCaptions as our new Secretary. Tom is part owner of eCaptions, a San Diego-based captioning agency. Prior to entering the captioning industry, Tom was a software developer, specializing in the medical instruments. He has a BA in Economics as well as an MBA. Once ensconced in the world of captioning, Tom quickly realized there was much to do to raise awareness and improve accessibility throughout society, as well as to increase the respect for and visibility of captioners. Tom was a founding member and the chair of Language Access Professionals Association (LAPA), a lobbying group that fought to keep ASL interpreters’ and captioners’ right to work as independent contractors in the state of California.  Thank you, Tom, for serving on the Global Alliance Board of Directors.

Lastly, we are currently planning our next Empower Hour.  Stay tuned for the next date and time.  If you missed our last Empower Hour for Medical Professionals, you can view it on our YouTube channel.

WHY DOES THE NCSP MATTER?
What is the NCSP?  It is the NER-Certified Speech-to-Text Provider assessment.  The NER is the method used to grade the assessment. NER stands for number, edition, recognition – the type of errors realtime captioners make.  Chris Ales and Stephen Clark explain it in this short video.  This assessment is real world for the job duties of a realtime captioner.

But why is this assessment important?  Consumers and clients need to have a baseline to be able to make informed decisions when hiring captioning services.  The NCSP is available for every method of captioning: stenographic, voice, or automatic speech recognition.  Some certifications are for specific methods.  How is a consumer or potential client to determine the difference between different methods when the testing requirements are different?  The NCSP offers an apples-to-apples comparison.

Differentiate yourself from the competition!  If you have questions, check out the FAQ page on our website, or email us at info@speechtotextcaptioning.org.
