FROM THE CHAIR
You voted and we have a new Board!  I would like to welcome our new Directors to the Board:
  • Jessica Aiello (captioning firm owner)
  • Shannon Tyree (consumer)
  • Katie Wright (consumer)
  • Orla Pearson (steno captioner/firm owner)
  • Rip Wilson – (consumer - filling a vacant seat)
Your Executive Committee for the next year is:
  • Jen Schuck – Chair (steno captioner)
  • Kimberly Shea – Chair-Elect (steno captioner)
  • Tom Brown – Treasurer (firm owner)
  • Shannon Tyree – Secretary (consumer)
We are beyond excited with this new Board and expect great things this next year!

If you missed CapCom ’22, you can still catch it on replay!  Ron Drach shared why he is a member of the Global Alliance.  Gael Hannan shared her story on her new book co-authored with Shari Eberts, which you can find here.
Leading up to CapCom was our Fitness FUNraiser Challenge.  I would like to extend deep appreciation to those who actively participated by registering individually and/or created a Facebook Fundraiser:
  • Julia Emerson
  • Sue Sanossian
  • Tom Brown
  • Karyn Menck
  • Angie Fuoco
  • Amanda Lattuca
  • Michele Michaels
  • Lydia Oxenreider
  • Sebrina Crosby
  • Kimberly Shea & Biscuit from York
  • Charlie Fiss
We raised over $2,600 thanks to all of your efforts! We gave away prizes. Without each and every one of us helping, the road to equal access will be longer and bumpier.  So thank you for your help!

Thank you to AccessLOOP for doing the production and the streaming of CapCom.  Gratitude to Hearing Loss Live!, Rip Wilson, Julia Emerson, and Gael Hannan for donating prizes.  Thank you to Chris Ales, NCSP, and Jessica Spriggs for captioning as well as Jessica from Coman Certified Interpreting, LLC, for providing communication access in ASL.

The work of the Global Alliance is done at the committee level. Thus, we are looking for volunteers!  I know what you’re thinking, “I don’t have the time.  Surely someone else will do it.”  Guess what?  That’s the exact mindset that everyone has.  Do you want to make a change?  See something in the industry you don’t like?  Help us change it!!  Email info@speechtotextcaptioning.org today and let me know on which committee you would like to serve:
  • Polices & Procedures
  • Membership
  • Education/Communications
  • Fundraising/Strategic Partnerships
I’m eagerly awaiting your email!
Congratulations to the new NCSP!
Joshua Foley, NCSP

From the Immediate Past President
The Global Alliance of Speech-to-Text Captioning was launched three years ago with a simple vision – universal accessibility to the spoken word via all forms of captioning. We saw then the importance of including as members all methods of captioning, as well as the consumers who rely on captions in their everyday lives, and educators, students, industry, researchers and advocates.
From the beginning, the Global Alliance has been led by a small but dedicated group of members – captioners, consumers and advocates. Our Board has always represented the diversity of the Global Alliance. We’ve had Board members from the US, Canada, Australia, Spain, and Poland. And with the recent installation of our new board members, we now have a Board member in the United Kingdom. This Board includes members who are steno captioners, voice captioners, consumers and industry. And four members of our Board are deaf or hard of hearing. We’re very proud of the diversity of our Board of Directors!
If you’re reading this, then you are either a member, a supporter, or a follower. We appreciate your support, and we’re grateful for your interest, but we need more from you. If you’re a supporter or a follower, we absolutely need you to become a member today! If you’re a member and are not involved, contact us now. If you are a member and a captioner but you haven't yet signed up for the NCSP certification, do it now! We need you to get involved and help ensure the growth of the Global Alliance.
The Global Alliance is at a critical point in its existence, one where it either grows or grows stagnant. We need your help to bring in more members, to bring in more funding and funders, and to get the word out about who we are, what we’re doing, and why others need to join us.
If you’re not sure you see the value in membership, here is one huge value and one we’re excited about and proud of, and that is certification. We believe in quality captions, and we proudly welcome all methods of captioning, but we also expect the same quality captions from all members regardless of how they produce those captions. Early on we set a goal of creating an assessment to allow our professional members who are realtime captioners to earn certification. After more than a year of working on this, we proudly introduced the NCSP, or NER-Certified Speech-to-Text Provider certification.  We now have seven members who have passed the NCSP. Find out more about the NCSP here, then sign up today and become certified!
The Global Alliance is also working on a quality initiative. This is a huge undertaking, but it is one that is at the core of who we are and why we exist. We believe that regardless of how captions are produced – be it steno, voice, ASR, meaning-for-meaning captioning such as TypeWell or C-Print, Velotype, Palantype or post-production captioning – quality and usability for the consumer should be at the forefront. If you support quality captioning, then step up and support the Global Alliance!
My time as Immediate Past Chair and a member of the Board of Directors ended last week. I’m grateful to the many members who have helped me in my time as Chair. I couldn’t have done it without them. I know our new Board will do great things, but we need your support. Become a member, get involved, get certified. We’re counting on YOU!
