Member involvement – every group needs it. Since our inception, many of our dedicated members have helped establish the Global Alliance as a leader in advocating for quality captioning. They have served on our committees; created content for, and served on, our Webinar Series; presented during online gatherings, to speak about the Global Alliance and the benefits of captioning; and devoted countless hours to help this young association fulfill its vision and mission. So much has been done in the almost two years since the Global Alliance was launched, but so much more needs to be done. With member involvement, the Global Alliance thrives and moves forward. Without it, we grow stagnant and the timetable to achieve our goals is further extended.
Our committees need additional members. Our Board needs members to step up and be future leaders and officers. Reach out by email at info@speechtotextcaptioning.org or give us a call at (604) 639-3924. We need you and your talents right now!

Our final webinar, "Voice Captioning for Educators, Students & Professionals," was held on April 29. Global Alliance member Julia Emerson (USA), herself a voice captioner, did a terrific job acting as our host and moderator. Our expert panel of voice captioners – Christine Ales (USA), Mathew Call (USA), and Lukasz Dutka (Poland) – spoke about what voice captioning is; what it takes to be a voice captioner and how to become one; the types of work available; voice commands, prepping techniques, and the types of technology needed. Following presentations, presenters answered questions from the audience for the next 20 minutes.
It was heartening to have such a good turnout from students who are studying voice captioning and are well on their way to becoming voice captioners!
During our six-part Webinar Series, speakers presented on topics of interest to steno and voice captioners as well as consumers.
All six webinars are available to purchase and view on demand,
with open captions.
- “Innovation and Software: Tools for Realtime and Post-Production Captioning”
- “Interlingual Subtitling, With and Without an Interpreter: A Respeaker’s Perspective”
- “Know Your Audience” (realtime captioning from a consumer’s perspective)
- “Captioning in a World with No Prep”
- “Sports Captioning”
- “Voice Captioning for Educators, Students & Professionals”
Thank you to all our presenters, moderators and hosts and realtime captioners for helping to make this important and timely series of webinars professional, engaging and fully accessible!
We are grateful to our Webinar Series sponsors.
We could not do this without your support!

Our Board of Directors’ quarterly meeting took place on May 12. This was the last Board meeting before the end of terms for all four of our Officers. Nominations have been received for three of the four Officer positions – Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Chair and Chair-Elect positions, per our bylaws, must be filled by a current Board member. Karyn Menck, our current Vice-Chair, has agreed to stay on as Chair-Elect but only until a Director can move into that position. That will then create a vacant Director’s seat on the Board. If you’re interested in serving as a Director on our Board, please let us know by emailing us.
Steve Clark, our current Chair, will become Immediate Past Chair, which is a nonvoting, advisory position on the Board of Directors.
You can read more about the proposed slate of Officers here:
Jennifer Schuck, USA, Chair (steno captioner)
VACANT, Chair-Elect
Julia Emerson, USA, Secretary (voice captioner)
Kimberly Shea, USA, Treasurer (steno captioner)
Per our bylaws, Board members will vote on the slate of nominees before the August Board meeting, with new Officers installed during the August Board meeting. All Global Alliance Board meetings are open to any member and are fully accessible.
