2022

The Global Alliance is proud to support quality captioning, regardless of the method used to produce those captions. As our vision states, we believe in universal accessibility to the spoken word via all forms of captioning. We also know the importance of certification, to both the captioner and the caption consumer. With all of this in mind, we created the NCSP, NER-Certified Speech-to-Text Provider, realtime assessment. This assessment tests any method of captioning by using the same metrics and same test materials. We welcome all to join us and to sit for our assessment, but to earn our certification you must prove your skills. One assessment, multiple methods, all worthy of the NCSP certification.

Learn more about the NCSP here. Register for the NCSP here.

The NCSP shows your colleagues and clients that you believe in quality captioning and are invested in the present and future of captioning. When hiring a professional, consumers want one who has proven credentials. Get registered and get certified today!

CapCom ‘22 celebrates the work, dedication, and success as captioners, consumers, and industry continue in their efforts to establish a quality standard in the captioning industry. To support these efforts, donate here.

Joining our celebration and membership drive this year will be Gael Hannan! She will talk about her new book, co-authored with Shari Eberts, "Hear & Beyond: Live Skillfully with Hearing Loss." She will also be announcing the winners of the Fitness FUNraising Challenge.

Learn about the NCSP captioner certification and join the Caption Quality Task Force in their data-gathering mission to aid in accessibility advocating to aid in increasing the accuracy of captioning on television networks.

You are also invited to join our fundraising efforts to help us continue to be a resource for captioners and the consumers who rely on captioning for equal and effective communication.

Join us as we celebrate CapCom ‘22 and continue our mission of universal accessibility to the spoken word via all forms of captioning.

With two years in the making, our certification program has launched. The Global Alliance was founded with the idea that there would be a certification that accurately assessed a captioner's skills. "Time has flown by and January 2022 is here! Steve [Clark] and I have met our goal. The NCSP certification is now available!” says Chris Ales, co-chair of the Certification/Assessment Committee. “Without the support of the task force -- Ken Frommert, Lukasz Dutka, Josh Foley, and Deanna Baker -- we would not have met our goal of a January 2022 rollout.”... read on here

2022

What makes you want to join an association? There are so many nonprofit organizations in the world. They are all started with a specific goal in mind. In general, they all want to make the world a better place, improve the lives of society in one way or another. With nearly 20% of the world’s population having some level of hearing loss, this is exactly why the Global Alliance needs your membership.
Hearing loss is an invisible disability, but you know this already. Professional captioners are frustrated with the industry. Consumers are frustrated with less-than-effective communication access on television or no access to events such as city council meetings.

  • Global Alliance Update  - June 1,  2022
Here we are embarking on summer – except for our friends in the southern hemisphere who are headed into their winter. There are many issues in the world that need advocacy. Here in the U.S. it is Pride Month which celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQ community. It also shines a spotlight on the work that needs to be done all around the world to create a diverse and inclusive community in everything we do.
  • Global Alliance Update  - April 1,  2022

We are one quarter of the way into 2022. The world continues to have much conflict. The one thing that has not changed is advocacy for human rights.
To that end, Kimberly Shea, Treasurer, and I participated in the Disability Justice Fair on March 26, hosted by New York State, District 56, Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman. Particularly, we participated in the panel discussion regarding IEPs in the state. Since this was a hybrid event, Typewell captions as well as ASL were available via Zoom.

  • Global Alliance Update  - March 1,  2022
The NER-Certified Speech-to-Text Provider assessment is now accepting registrants! This certification proves to consumers and clients that you have the captioning skills to provide the best service in the industry. Why should you get NER-certified? The NER model is the best assessment of a real-world captioning setting. It doesn’t matter if you are a stenographer, voice writer, or have an ASR engine providing captions. Quality metrics are important regardless of the method. Do you have more questions?

  • Global Alliance Update  - September 30,  2021

As we approach the last quarter of 2021, I reflect back and wonder: Where has the year gone? However, the more important question is: What are the plans for the future? The Global Alliance is working hard on the details to be able to roll out our certification program in early 2022. This is one of the main reasons the Global Alliance was formed, to have a program where consumers and purchasers of captioning services could make informed decisions on procuring quality captioning. Our certification program will be...
