FROM THE CHAIR
On Friday, January 22, 2021, the Global Alliance held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), followed by its quarterly Board Meeting.

During our AGM, we received the election results for the four open seats on our Board of Directors. Two seats will continue to be filled by Michele Michaels (USA, consumer) and Ken Frommert (USA, industry), who will each serve an additional two-year term. Thank you, Ken and Michele, for your willingness to stay on the Board and offer your rich and diverse experience and knowledge!

We are excited to welcome two new Directors to our Board of Directors: Łukasz Dutka (Poland, captioner, educator and industry) and Nikki Hare (USA, voice captioner).

Łukasz Dutka
is a live subtitler (live captioner), interpreter, audiovisual translator and expert in media accessibility. He works as a lecturer at the University of Warsaw, Poland, and sits on the Management Board of Dostepni.eu, a local accessibility services provider.
Łukasz has been teaching courses on audiovisual translation, subtitling for the Deaf and the hard-of-hearing, live subtitling, and conference interpreting at the University of Warsaw, Poland and several other universities across Poland and Lithuania.
In 2013, he set up a company to provide subtitling for TV and surtitling for theaters. In 2018, Łukasz started training live subtitlers for Dostepni.eu, including respeakers and live correctors who then went on to work providing accessibility at live events.
Łukasz alternates between Warsaw, Poland, and the Canary Islands, Spain. He speaks Polish, English and Spanish, and a bit of Italian and Portuguese.

Nikki Hare is a voicewriter from Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from the College of Court Reporting in 2016. Immediately her heart was drawn to communication access realtime translation, or CART captioning. Working as an independent captioner for several agencies throughout the United States, she captions for a variety of university students as well as various news, entertainment, sports and corporate meetings. While a young professional, she sees the need for quality captioning services and wants to do her part in providing communication access to everyone.

Welcome aboard, Nikki and Łukasz!

Thank you, Sue Sanossian and Pablo Romero-Fresco
It is with deep appreciation and respect that we say thank you to Sue Sanossian (Australia, industry) and Pablo Romero-Fresco (Spain, educator and researcher) for their service on our Board of Directors. Sue and Pablo were among the first Global Alliance Directors, 2020-2021. Though no longer serving on the Board, Pablo and Sue will continue to be strong and important voices within the Global Alliance through their continued committee work. Sue serves on the Strategic Partnerships/Fundraising Committee, and Pablo serves on the Certification and Assessment Committee.

Thank you, Pablo and Sue, for your early support of the Global Alliance and your continued dedication to our vision and mission!

Global Alliance Website Adds Consumer Page

We have been working on some exciting new features for the Global Alliance website. In 2020 we developed guidelines dedicated to consumers, and this online document is now complete. And here’s the good news: we will be showcasing these guidelines on a new consumer page. This consumer page will feature a document designed to help the consumer gather information to aid in selecting a live service caption provider.
This online form guides the consumer through specific questions, some not often thought of by consumers, and data is generated based on the consumer’s answers. Then the completed form is used to produce a report for the consumer. This report can be shared with a live service caption provider, or the consumer can click the “Find a Captioning Service Provider” tab on our website and choose from among our members, using the report as a guide. The member link will be displayed inside the consumer page.
This is just one of many new features we’re adding to our website. Further details will be shared in future newsletters.
