Global Alliance Celebrates its 2nd Anniversary with CapCom21!

Members, supporters and friends of the Global Alliance gathered virtually on August 5 for CapCom21, the captioning community coming together to celebrate our anniversary and help raise funds for the Global Alliance. Meaghan Thomas, a reporter for WKRN-TV in Nashville, Tennessee (USA) and a person with hearing loss, kicked off the celebration and acted as our emcee. Entertainment was provided by Madeleine Slate, a talented young singer/songwriter from Canada. Her voice and her songs elicited both tears and joy, according to live chat box comments from attendees.
This was a truly global event, with our emcee and ASL interpreters located in the US; our musical talent performing from Canada; our captioner working from Ireland; our platform support provided from England; a committee member located in Australia; and members and supporters viewing from Poland, Europe and South America. This is the Global Alliance!
Through the sale of raffle tickets and silent auction bids, we gained much-needed operational funds. Four winning raffle numbers were drawn for cash prizes, including the grand prize of $5,000!
A huge thank you to Global Alliance members Jen Schuck, Karyn Menck, Sue Sanossian, Kimberly Shea and Sebrina Crosby for pulling together this celebration – and in less than two weeks!
AccessLOOP donated its platform and amazingly talented support team to produce what we humbly believe is the most accessible and best-looking event ever on YouTube! Check out AccessLOOP to learn more about them and their platform: https://www.accessloop.com/
The Global Alliance thanks you, our members and supporters, for your support. We plan on making this an annual event, and we can’t wait to see you at CapCom22!

At its August 11, 2021 Board Meeting, the Global Alliance said goodbye to Secretary Chris Ales, whose term has concluded. Chris, a voice captioner who lives in the state of Michigan (USA) is a Founding Member of the Global Alliance. She graciously agreed to step in as Secretary after our first Secretary stepped down. Chris has served on the Guidelines Committee and the Webinar Series Committee, and she is the backbone of the Certification and Assessment Committee, where she will continue to lead the way in creating and crafting our certification and assessment program. In addition to her committee work, Chris hosted a webinar during our Webinar Series, and she even donated her time to caption one of our webinars.
Karyn Menck, a steno captioner who lives in the state of Tennessee (USA), has concluded her term as Vice Chair, but she will continue in this role for a short time due to our Chair-Elect position being temporarily unfilled. Karyn, who was one of the creators of the Global Alliance, is also a Founding Member. Karyn has served on the Membership and Nominations Committee, the Webinar Series Committee, and the Strategic/Fundraising Committee. Karyn has also spent countless hours, working on behalf of the Global Alliance, to coordinate live captioning for the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Walks4Hearing throughout the US.
Thank you, Chris and Karyn, for your leadership, professionalism and dedication to the Global Alliance!
