From the Chair

The Season of Gratitude is upon us. What are you grateful for?
I’m grateful for:
  • The Global Alliance Board Members.  We could not exist without the powerful team that leads this organization.  Their commitment to our mission is unwavering.
  • The Global Alliance Members. It is truly heart-warming to know that there are individuals who are as passionate about the highest quality captioning as I am.  An organization that is diverse in its membership and the methods it represents can effect mass change.  We need more movers and shakers!
  • The opportunity to serve.  The old adage of “Do what you love and never work a day in your life” – it’s so true and I’m grateful for the opportunity to touch someone’s life on a daily basis.
  • The advocacy work highlighted in this newsletter.
I could go on and on for all the things I am grateful for, but I will stop here.  I hope you take the time to reflect on what you might be grateful for.
The Board met last week.  There are no lack of ideas for spreading awareness about hearing loss. Our top priority is finalizing our certification and assessment program.  Much work has been done to get this effort up and running, and we are CLOSE!  The goal is to start our pilot program by the end of January 2022.  This certification will be using the NER model. Gratitude goes to Chris Ales, Stephen Clark, Ken Frommert, Josh Foley, and Deanna Baker for bringing this program to fruition.  Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to learn more about this model.
Put November 30th on your calendar!  We are launching a new series called Empower Hour!  Each session will have different topics focused for different audiences.  These hours will consist of learning opportunities, advocacy work, listening to our consumers, answering questions about captioning.  Nothing is off limits!  Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to learn more.
I hope your season of gratitude lasts all year long.

Global Alliance Presents to HLAA
On Nov 3, Global Alliance Chair Jen Schuck and Past Chair Steve Clark presented to the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) a webinar entitled “Which Method of Realtime Captioning is Appropriate: Stenographic, Voice or Automatic Speech Recognition?”

During this presentation, Jen and Steve spoke about all things captioning, including discussing the various methods and forms of captioning, and provided insight to help with making an informed decision when advocating for accommodations in any setting. They also explored why caption quality is sometimes lacking and provided advocacy tips to ensure you receive quality captions.
There were 234 people in attendance – caption consumers, captioners of all methods, educators, advocates and industry. Thank you to all who joined us and for the many great questions and comments. We had so many questions and comments that our time ran out before we could answer all of them!
Once HLAA makes available the captioned recording of this webinar, we will add the link on our website and in the next newsletter. Thank you to HLAA for the opportunity to partner and present this webinar!

Global Alliance Members Participate in HLAA Walk4Hearing
Across the US, Global Alliance members have been forming alliances and participating in the HLAA Walk4Hearing. These walks increase public awareness about hearing loss, eradicate the stigma associated with it and raise funds for national and local programs.
Any donations that are raised through your alliance are split 60/40, with 60% of the funds going to HLAA and 40% to the walker’s designated recipient. That means our participating members have helped to bring in over $1,000 to the Global Alliance! We encourage you to create or join an alliance for future walks. Walking can be done at the regional event or can be done virtually.
Help support HLAA and your Global Alliance by joining a 2022 Walk4Hearing!
