From the Chair

The Global Alliance is entering its fifth week, and we are excited by the continued strong interest and support we have received. Any organization is only as strong as its members. The diversity of our membership will elevate the Global Alliance to be the leading professional authority on speech-to-text captioning, representing all captioners, consumers and industry. Together we will do great things!

The Global Alliance proudly supports the stenographic method of producing captions. Three of our four officers are professional stenographic captioners who caption, day in and day out, as they have done for decades. We also proudly support the voice writing method of producing captions. One of our officers is a voice writer captioner, who captions daily, trains new captioners and showcases her skills at the highest level. Our tent is large enough, and our vision forward-looking enough, for all captioners. We not only walk the walk, but also we literally talk the talk, speaking to captioning students at high school career days and to deaf and hard of hearing advocates and civic groups about the education and training it takes to become a realtime captioner.

With input from ALL our members, we will be the only organization to create and administer real-world testing — equal testing of ALL methods of captioning — to ensure the highest quality and accuracy for those who rely on captions in their daily lives. To make this happen, we need you! We need your membership, your input, your expertise, and your commitment. Join us and help create and guide the future of captioning!

Our advocacy work is well underway. Be sure to read the article by our Vice Chair, Karyn Menck, detailing our support for the Hearing Loss Association of America and its Walk4Hearing events taking place in Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; and Phoenix, AZ. We ask for your support as we join HLAA and the Walk4Hearing. Help us take the next step in improving the lives of people with hearing loss.

Our Founding Members Campaign continues through October 31. This is the time where we raise awareness of our vision and mission and raise funds for our day-to-day operations. Please see our website here for details about how to become a Founding Member and the many benefits you receive. A reminder that General Membership will open on November 1.

Your all-volunteer board continues to work hard to fulfill our vision: Universal accessibility to the spoken word via all forms of captioning. As always, we want to hear from you. We can’t do this without you. Join us today!

Thank you for being a Founding Member!

From all of the Founding Members of the Global Alliance, a shout-out to every captioner who has been on air during Hurricane Dorian.  Your tireless efforts are immensely appreciated during this time!

From the Vice Chair

The Global Alliance is excited to announce we will be supporting the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Walk4Hearing.  We will be partnering with HLAA this fall by being a sponsor and having teams in three cities.

Did you know that the Walk4Hearing began in 2006? This year alone, there will be Walks in 20 cities across the country!  Since inception, they have had almost 100,000 walkers and 8,300 teams. Proceeds are used to raise public awareness about hearing health, advocate on the federal level, hold research symposia, work with industry, and support those with hearing loss.

Please join one of our teams!  Whether you walk or help fund-raise, your support is appreciated.  50% of the funds will go to HLAA – National, 40% to the Global Alliance, and 10% to the local organizers to help cover costs. Your donation will go a long way towards supporting individuals with hearing loss and quality captioning.  Click on the links below to join us.
