 | Ken EllisAfter a dozen years in the recording/audio engineering field, coupled with video production operations management, I had the occasion to buy post-production captioning services from an established caption supplier on behalf of a customer. I was somewhat shocked by the technical and business practices of that supplier, and set out to improve the captioning experience in my local and regional market, for both live and pre-recorded programming. My technical background and general education served me well, and the startup was quickly successful.As the owner of Central Caption Co. for now 30+ years, I have seen a variety of video format and captioning solution advances. Over those decades, Central Caption has employed various innovative captioning methods for both pre-recorded programming and live, on-site or hybrid-remote projects. Several clients have been with us for well over two decades. We have also produced two software products we (and others) use to streamline workflow and enhance quality for common types of live event captioning. Complete and accurate preparation is our continual focus, both for content and technical workflow. We strive for no surprises on day-of-show, for ourselves, our customer, while delivering the highest quality for our consumers. With this approach, I’ve seen what’s necessary to produce great captions, and I’m occasionally perplexed when I see world-class events fail to deliver for their caption consumers. I know things can be better, but it’s a process. I want to join in that process, by supporting our consumer members. |
